Set Designer and/or Master Carpenter
Gateway Center for Performing Arts is seeking a new member to join our creative team as Set Designer for its 2021-2022 Season The ideal candidate is able to fill both Set Designer and Master Carpenter responsibilities and is available for all scheduled productions. We will accept applications for individual/groups of shows and applicants interested in either Set Designer or Master Carpenter.
This is a paid position with a competitive stipend, compensated for both/either Design and Carpentry.
GCPA highly values the safety of its students and employees. All productions will have COVID-19 safety procedures and contingency plans that will be adjusted throughout the year based on the current climate, requirements and recommendations.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the guidance of the Artistic Director, the Set Designer/Master Carpenter will be an integral part of the creative team for Youth Theatre Company productions.
Responsibilities may include (dependent on Designer/Carpentry designation):
o Design set(s) in line with the needs and requests of the creative team and within the given budget and venue limitations
o To be present or available electronically for production meetings, as reasonably requested by GCPA
o Provide design, including ground plans, elevations and color elevations by the agreed-upon deadline and provide revisions as needed
o Adhere to deadlines as mutually agreed to in production calendar
o Staying up to date with electronic rehearsal reports and providing feedback/answers as needed
o Coordinate with carpenters and painters as needed
o Comply with procedures and policies of the venue
o Manage the order and delivery of materials
o Manage the load in and build of the set, including the volunteers and crew provided by GCPA during the agreed upon date(s)
o To be present at load in, crew views, technical and dress rehearsals, as reasonably requested by GCPA
o Coordinate the dismantling, removal, and storage of all set pieces immediately following the closing performance, with the assistance of GCPA staff and volunteers
o Bear final responsibility for the Set Design to the CONTRACTORS highest standards
Requirements:
2 years applicable experience and/or training
Good communication skills
Strong time-management skills and self starter
Works well in a fast paced production environment
Working knowledge of 3D software
Team player who genuinely enjoys working and collaborating with others
Willingness to take feedback and rework material while maintaining a fresh perspective
Preferred:
Portfolio that demonstrates seasoned design skills

The dates listed below are limited to the load in, set build, production, and strike dates. Additional dates will be scheduled for production meetings and the work on design and pre-production planning will be at your own schedule without given deadlines.

MINIS SHOW/JUNIORS SHOW
This is our production camp for the elementary age and another show for our middle school age. We will want one design that can work for both with small adjustments. Shows being announced September 18th.
Production meetings would happen in March with first draft designs due in May.
Venue: Robert Reim in Kirkwood
The set will be loaded in the week of June 20th, likely Monday and Tuesday evenings.
HIGH SCHOOL SHOW
Rehearsals start July 7th.
Production meetings in April/May with first draft designs be due in June.
Show being announced September 18th.
Venue: TBDTech: July 30th - August 3rd
Performances: August 4 - 7*
This may be pushed a week later. Venue is still to be decided.
