Acting is more than just memorizing lines. It is using the knowledge we have about human psyche and behavior to make words on a page come to life. In this class, students will begin learning how to dissect a script and understand the importance of specific vocal and physical choices in the telling of a story.

Acting Styles will be 7 weeks of guest teachers leading a master class on various styles of acting. Each week will be a masterclass on a new and exciting topic! Students will learn about these various styles, how to apply them in musical theatre and other venues, and further their understanding of the various acting techniques that are available to explore. Possible class topics may include Shakespearean script analysis and performance, Movement for the Actor, Film Acting, Lecoq Neutral Masks, Laban Movement, Intro to Chekhovian Acting, and more! Students will be able to walk in for $30 or sign up for the full summer session. Check back later this spring for a detailed schedule!

GCPA ballet is the perfect class for theatre performers looking to develop a strong ballet foundation. Fundamental ballet technique with terminology, positions, and musicality in performance.

In this class, students will develop the three disciplines of Musical Theatre through studying scenes. Vocally, they will work on technique through proper breathing and sound production. They will also learn fundamental musical theatre dance steps with an emphasis on execution and formations. Scene work will delve into character development and physicalization. The semester will culminate in musical theatre scenes, songs, and dances!

This course is structured to provide beginning level understanding and execution of acting techniques for film, specifically preparing students to audition for and act in commercials. This will be done through learning of vocabulary, discussion/lecture, technique training, script study, and recording. Students will come away with an understanding of and ability to execute on camera terminology & acting techniques differentiated from stage acting.

In the beginning levels, our Musical Theatre Dance classes focus on core concepts, terminology and steps used in musical theatre jazz as well as developing base technique in alignment, placement and preparation for larger steps. In the intermediate levels, students will place a larger focus on style from a variety of musical theatre choreographic styles: classic, golden age, and contemporary genres. They will begin to develop increased balance and flexibility, as well as turns, leaps, jumps and kicks. At the Advanced level, students focus on choreography from all areas of musical theatre such as Bob Fosse, Gillian Lynn, Andy Blankenbuehler, and more, as well as the ability to interpret original choreography. Throughout all musical theatre dance classes, students will develop the ability to tell complex and engaging stories through dance.

This class is structured to introduce the actor to the basics of improvisational storytelling through SNL style improv. Games and activities focus on developing self confidence and teamwork, trusting the individual and group intuition, exploring larger-than-life physicality, mindfulness, and making big choices. Each class begins with a warm up that encourages teamwork, communication and collaboration. A variety of games and exercises will be introduced to keep the pace moving and creativity flowing. Each class will finish with a short group discussion on what were successes for the day and what the students learned about themselves and improv that will incite change for the following week.

Leveled tap technique focusing on musical theatre tap vocabulary, steps and presentation. Through warm ups, students will learn to articulate the feet in basic rhythms and patterns. Progression and combinations will teach basic tap steps that are common in the musical theatre tap vocabulary with a strong focus on body position and posture.
